Next Step's Breakaway and Personal Protection Training Course

Introduction

The course is aimed at staff who in their line of work come across violence and aggressive behaviour from clients and members of the public. This could be in a residential setting or out in the community.
The course is a one day course which will be a six hour day. All training is of a physical nature and all staff can attend, if any staff member has any limitations to physical exercise then the trainer should be told before the session begins.

The instructor

Gail Greensmith is a 5th Dan in judo, 4th Dan in shorin ju-jitsu and 3rd Dan in karate jitsu and has been training for 34 years. Over the past 20 years she has been working within the care setting, this includes residential and community based with clients with varying degrees of challenging behaviour. For several years now she has been teaching others in ways to escape threats and potentially violent situations. She also teaches self defence to all ages and genders in street situations.


Aim of the training

The aim of the training is to give staff basic skills to manage and cope when in a potentially violent situation and from numerous different attacks on the person.


Objectives

At the end of each training session the participants involved will be able to:
Understand what violence in the workplace is,
Observe the level of risk and complete an on the spot risk assessment,
Understand the correct use of body language,
Understand the meaning of fight or flight,
Be competent and able to use breakaway techniques effectively.


Course Contents

Introductions,
Descriptions of violence and aggression within their own work settings,
On the spot risk assessments,
Body language reading and the correct use of in a situation,
Discussion surrounding the fight or flight theory,
Lunch
*Breakaway techniques training,
The what if's.

*The breakaway training will include how to escape from:
Wrist grabs
Hair pulls
Strangles and chokes
Bear hugs from behind
Collar and clothing grabs
Bites
It will also include how to evade or deal with slaps, punches and kicks.
